There
is a great variety of fish in the waters of the
Sea of Cortez off Bahia de los Angeles. Most anglers
enjoy going after the Yellowtail which frequent the
waters nearly year round. Other species you can
find here include SheepHead, Cabrilla, Whitefish (Blanco),
Sculpin, and Jawfish (Avado). Dorado are the other
big favorite when the schools move up to our area during
the summer months.
TACKLE
SUGGESTIONS:
RODS:
Most
anglers familiar with going after the larger fish have
their own gear preferences. But a good general
setup for the casual fisherman would be one sturdy rod
loaded with 30lb test or better. It is good also
to bring along a lighter rod for making bait that you
can tie a "Lucky Joe" onto.
WEIGHTS:
Standard
issue down here are 8oz, 10oz, & 12oz. torpedo weights.
These should cover the varying conditions and
current. Make sure also to bring enough
snap swivels and regular swivels in case you lose your
rigs from time to time.
LURES:
6X
Salas (or larger) in Blue work great, as do Krocodiles.
Be sure to bring along some bait jigs for catching
mackerel.
HOOKS:
Long
shank hooks work well for cabrilla and other bottom
fish. The long shank makes it easier and safer
to remove the hook especially when you catch a triggerfish!
